Canada is well known for providing some of the finest metal in all of the world. It does not matter which genre it is, it could be blackened death, technical death or pure black metal with folk and viking themes, the country just seems to produce quality musicians. Case in point: Scythia, a progressive power metal act who loves to toss in as much folk and renaissance festival melodies in their songs as humanly possible. Songs of questing, searching, fighting and exploring has always been the case for Scythia’s songs. The new album Lineage is more of the good Scythia we’ve come to love but this time they kind of have a more serious tone about them. But is it as good as …of Exile and …of Conquest?
Lineage starts off rather heavy with loud guitars and screams bellowing out as Scythian atmosphere and folk remedies push on with catchy galloping guitar riffs. This is definitely Scythia! The music still has the charm from past work even though a Bear Claw Tavern type of song may be missing from the picture, there are still many reason to headbang and raise your drinking glass whilst Lineage is playing. There seems to be more of a focus on the song writing as it’s just layered with rich musicianship with complex lead work and fun rhythm sections.
One thing that isn’t as good as the past 2 albums are the vocals, Dave Khan has a slightly different pitch that sounds okay but it just somewhat does not fit. Harsh vocals are definitely used a bit more this time around but it does not sound forced. The music still has a ton of character and charm to it but it’s missing that fun energy that Scythia has had in the past. They may have matured and created a more serious form of their music here on Lineage but it’s noticeably not as good.
